free⋅lance [free-lans, -lahns, -lans, -lahns]
noun, verb, -lanced, -lanc⋅ing, adjective, adverb –noun Also, free lance. 1. freelancer. a person who works as a writer, designer, photographer, performer, or the like, selling work or services by the hour, day, job, etc., Independent, 2. A soldier armed with a lance; a lancer. Mercenary of the Middle Ages with exceptional skill, sought after and for hire. Knight or roving soldier. The word freelance dates from the middle ages in a time where anarchy ruled and disputes were sought with war and armies. Only the strong survived and Nobles sought to surround themselves with the best. The word Mercenary today may have a negative connotation, but back then, it was the difference between keeping or loosing your kingdom or ever life or death. Knighthood traditions still live today because at the core, basic values still hold true. We chose the freelance knight for our theme as it is stepped in history and ties into our core values. When moving forward we often must look to the past and it is with this in mind we constructed … Our Ethos Our group is based the key desire to belong. We rarely solicit or invite, our philosophy instead is an open door one. People who share our values and business practices and fulfill selection criteria are welcome to come in. Freelancing is not for the faint of heart. It is not controlled by any one group, organization or individual but instead a hugely competitive industry of free enterprise where there are literally no rules. At best there is a gentleman's understanding at worst it is dog eat dog. The people on our site do not subscribe to this manner of doing business; instead we feed on each others enthusiasm, share information and work at creating a healthy work environment. The most successful of freelancers are robust, creative individuals who thrive on its independence; choosing who they work for and who they work with and more importantly with whom they associate. The NZCREWS ethos is about the everlasting desire to be better at what we do, surrounding ourselves with others who are equally as self-motivated and knowledgeable and who have a high moral ethic in their jobs and personal lives. The Ethos is about digging a little deeper and going a little further because doing a good job is the minimum standard, surpassing it is an expectation. Our Ethos is not an easy one to maintain which is why membership selection is stringent. Our membership like it that way, our clients love it. Leading the way is not NZCREWS itself but the words and actions of every individual member; NZCREWS is simply the forum by which we choose to make it happen. |
